Prostate MRI

An MRI scanner is a large medical device that creates highly detailed images of the body.

During the scan, you will lie still on an examination table that gently slides into the scanner, a large tube-shaped machine. To make the experience more comfortable, you’ll be given headphones with music to help reduce the sound of the scan. A prostate MRI helps determine whether a tumor is likely to be malignant (cancerous).

If a biopsy is needed, MRI images can also guide the procedure, allowing the doctor to take samples precisely from the suspicious area(s).

Prostate ultrasound

If prostate cancer is suspected, a prostate ultrasound (also called a transrectal ultrasound) is often performed. During the exam, you’ll lie on your back or your side. A small ultrasound probe is gently inserted into the rectum. This may feel uncomfortable, but it is usually not painful.

Rectal examination

During a rectal examination, the urologist checks the prostate by gently feeling it through the rectum. The doctor uses a gloved, lubricated finger to assess the size, shape, and firmness of the prostate. This simple examination helps detect any abnormalities that may require further investigation.
